Britain's growth harmed by poor broadband speeds
Britain risks falling behind the rest of Europe as a result of poor broadband speeds, it has been claimed in a new study. According to a research team from the University of Oxford, connection speeds in the UK as well as Spain and Italy are currently just below the level of performance needed to deliver a good online user experience. With future generations of web applications, web-based television and streaming of high-definition videos, relying on high-speed and stable broadband connections, the failure to upgrade existing networks could lead to significant disadvantages.
The study follows news (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 8 September 2008) that telecoms group BT and broadband company Virgin Media both plan significant upgrades to their broadband network by 2012.
