Gatwick airport to be sold off

Airports operator BAA has announced that it is to sell off Gatwick airport. The news comes after a Competition Commission report last month recommended a break-up of BAA's monoply over London airports following concerns about BAA's poor passenger service record (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 20 August 2008).

The sale of Gatwick, which is Britain's second largest airport and handles about 35m passengers each year, is expected to yield about £3bn for BAA.
