Tesco under fire for 30p a bottle beer offer

Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket, has been criticised for offering a crate of 18 bottles of lager for £5. The offer, which is available in stores until Sunday, puts the price of a bottle of Carlsberg Export lager at less than 30p. Staff at some stores say that the crates are selling at up to 100 per hour.

This is not the first time supermarkets have come under fire for offering cheap beer. Earlier this year, the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) asked the Government to ban supermarkets from selling cheap alcohol as their prices are often cheaper than the wholesale price available to certain pubs and bars (reported in 'In the News' on 9 January 2008)
