In my opinion, the best of the high street banks.

Terrible customer service. If you have a problem, don't bother trying to phone or email. Emails are obviously read by non-English speakers, as the the responses rarely have anything to do with your query.

Go to pay in a cheque and even the cashiers try to sell you Home/Motor insurance a mortgage or savings. I am under the impression that the staff are on daily targets to sell fee paying bank accounts ,mortgages etc. Majority of staff are helpful but many seem only interested in what they can sell you rather than how they can help you. The customer driven branch staff seem to be being managed out and replaced with hard selling staff. How can this be good for the long term customer relationship. A staff member told me that HSBC want the fee paying and Premier accounts and the rest of the "dross" could bank elsewhere. If you do not have a fee paying PLUS (12.95 month) account and you are not considered value to the bank the call is routed overseas. One of the "Selling" points of the fee paying account is U.K call centres this sums it up. HSBC stop this awful sales sales and sell em more culture for both the sake of your staff and customers.

Having worked for HSBC for ten years I can confirm the pressure on staff to sell products such as fee paying bank accounts and insurances and meet the branch daily points target is unbearable.
HSBC try to justify this as selling to customer needs. However if you have been efficient and helpful and at the end of the day do not have any points to report you will be monitored and eventually put on an action plan. Managers ask for pledges and the area office are constantly sending reports via email as to what branches are not performing and on some reports individual performances are also listed- a form of cyber bullying. we are now told that HSBC "Wants to be the Waitrose of banking" and attract only the Premier and Fee paying accounts and leave the "dross" to the other high street competitors. I have seen staff sell insurance to customers who cannot speak English, the same with fee paying accounts. The pressure is unbearbale and decent caring staff leave and are replaced with sales staff. The bonuses (salaries are low) are awared to those who have sold the most and hit target consequently you have staff who try and cherrypick only want to deal with a customer if there is a potential sale, rather than help with a query or service issue. I have known several colleagues off with stress due to this culture. HSBC will put a spin on it but all of the above is true- I know because I have worked in it.

I've been with Midland and now HSBC since I started banking in my teens, but recently their off-shore customer service has really wound me up. There have been two particular occasions when I've had to contact them about card issues, and have had to deal with long waits to terrible hold music, and then polite but sometimes unintelligible staff on long distance phone lines. I also find that they send me a lot of promotional mail about services that they should know I'm unlikely to need, if they just looked at the accounts I already have. Any personal touch they used to have has certainly gone out the window.

As a customer of 19 years, I had a Live Cash, Current Account,a First Direct on line account and finally an HSBC loan. Current account has been closed as I was charged in total £3,000 in bank charges over two years alone - and am legally challenging this. My First Direct account was hacked into within two weeks of having the account - £500 stolen and spent on mobile phone credits 300 miles from where I lived - and I have just discovered that my loan for £21K plus Insurance has been sold to me illegally and the matter is now before a Barrister as I have been informed that I am entitled to reclaim my entire loan, insurance and interest.

as a formerly satisfied customer of 18 years I am now of the opinion that HSBC are the worst performing bunch of exploitative dishonest deceitful charlatans that one could ever have the misfortune to have dealings with. I would advise everyone to avoid this bank.

I have been a customer of HSBC and its predecessors for over 30 years, and a customer of their offshore operation HSBC International for 8 years. Since the establishment of their "Customer Service" centre in Kuala Lumpur, the level of service has nosedived. What is most irritating is that they send out letters puporting to come from Jersey or the Isle of Man, with illegible signatures and no printed sender name, and when you call the number as the letter requests, you get someone in KL who is completely unable to deal with the matter.

I like HSBC. Nice branches, helpful staff. However, just went in as am moving to Hong Kong for a while with work. Needed to open up a HK dollar account to run alongside British account. They told me they could do it but would charge me 100 quid for the pleasure. And if I did it when I reached Hong Kong it would cost nothing. "The world's local bank." - do me a favour!
