1) Visit by ‘designer’ – nice lady who gave me some free (stale) cookies. That should have been an early warning sign 2) The design put together was rather basic and an attempt to colour in to match the colours of the furniture rather futile. At this point, when you looked at the design, all looked ok and that everything would fit in the bedroom ok. But it didn’t! See below. 3) Same old sales tactic – we’ll offer this off etc. But be warned if you use finance option, though (see other 'complaint websites'). I had issues with what I thought was 0% interest free for the first year, as long as I paid it off before the 12 months was up. Not so! 4) Took a couple of days to fit but there is all the hassle that you have to take out all the existing wardrobes first and make sure the space fits the standard sized wardrobes (they are in no way custom made). 5)Issues; the drawers had a blatant chip and the guy putting it together (this is self assembly/flat pack stuff and quality is not good) would have noticed. They came back and repaired it (about the only positive thing they did) 6)Noticed lots of marks on ceiling from where the wardrobes had been fitted (how did they manage that??). 7)Handles came off a few times – now super glued on (by me) 8)Drawers just too big for bedroom so they now sit in another room All in all; poor quality and very expensive for what they are. You really are better off looking at local craftsmen. Oh and the beds are also not worth the money – they fit them to the walls (which is not explained when you buy) so it becomes a real pain when you want to have a good clean behind the bed or move it for whatever reason (i.e. decorating, new carpet etc).

Hammonds design and fit bedroom (and home office) furniture. They have a wide range of styles and are flexible about fitting into awkward rooms etc. The actual process of getting a design and survey is pretty grim: a "designer" (who kept insisting he was not a salesman, but he undoubtedly was!) comes and spends two hours hand drawing (!) a design once you shown him the room and said which style from their range you are interested in. He comes up with a price as well which appears to be plucked out of the air (in our case allegedly a 35% discount) but his quote was £800 cheaper than a local firm designing the identical layout - to muddy the waters further, Hammonds make an absolutely identical range of furniture under the Heppelwhite brand which is franchised out to small local firms. We would have much preferred to give our custom to the small local company who were very much pleasanter to deal with, but their price was way too high compared with Hammonds. Once you have accepted Hammonds' quote and paid 20% up front, they send a proper surveyor who spends another couple of hours with his laptop and printer and he generates a proper detailed set of plans from which the factory makes the components. A few weeks later the fitter comes to install. This guy was excellent, meticulous and tidy and coped well with an old Victorian house where nothing is either square or level. He took two days, but couldn't finish the job as the factory hadn't sent all the parts. It soon became apparent that factory and fitters have remarkably poor lines of communication, and it took another four weeks before all the right parts had arrived and were fitted. They sent wrong parts once and then part of what was missing, but not all, and failed to tell us when the fitter was returning to finish the job (fortunately someone was in at the time). Once it was finally finished it looks great, exactly what we wanted and the workmanship is first class. Don't expect it to be cheap…
